It's not a recipe for the greatest movie ever, necessarily, but a far worse sin, in this world of Minion domination, would be to skimp on screen time for the little guys. The plot mostly is just a mechanism for Minion mayhem, allowing them the opportunity to pilot an airliner, learn kung fu from an acupuncturist (Michelle Yeoh) and repeatedly pronounce "San Francisco." More than any previous film, this one feels engineered to enable as much slapstick hijinks for the yellow ones as possible. Thankfully, "Rise of Gru" knows that its MacGuffins are nothing but Minion fodder. I'm sure you're just dying to know the fate of that amulet. ![]() In the fallout, Gru and the Minions sneak off with the amulet. With hair neatly combed, Gru shows up seeking his big break, only to be immediately dismissed as a mere child. Henson), takes possession of a powerful amulet and then holds auditions for new members in the Vicious 6's San Francisco secret lair beneath a music store called Criminal Records. Its new leader, the disco-styled Belle Bottom (Taraji P. ![]() The Vicious 6 has jettisoned its founder, an aged nunchuck-wielding criminal named Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin, a voice so distinctive that it pierces even something this cartoonish). The perfunctory storyline centers on Gru reaching for his diabolical dreams, and proving his mettle to an evildoer group called the Vicious 6. But the coming of age belongs less to Gru than his little army of sidekicks, who once again steal the show as they establish their undying allegiance to "Mini Boss." The outline of the film is a sequel to 2015 "Minions" and "Despicable Me" prequel for Gru (Steve Carell), who here is an 11¾-year-old aspiring supervillain. The Minions are one of the great second-banana success stories.Īnd the franchise's latest installment, "Minions: Rise of Gru," is smart enough not to reinvent the wheel - even if trying to do so might sound like the kind of job the Minions would love to get a crack at. They have swarmed the planet like that human mob in "World War Z," spreading a happy cartoon plague that long ago became endemic. Arkin also gets some nice time to work with Carell and act as a mentor to Gru as he finds his footing as a super villain. Now five films and 12 years into the "Despicable Me" series, the appeal of the bug-eyed, overalls-wearing, banana-yellow henchmen horde is overwhelming apparent. Henson (Belle Bottom), Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin), Jean-Clawed (Jean-Claude Van Damme), Svengeance (Dolph Lundgren), and Nun-Chuck (Lucy Lawless) the highlights are definitely Arkin and Henson as the leaders of the team. And the talent behind the characters is fantastic! From left to right, you have Stronghold (Danny Trejo), Taraji P. While many members of the team are underdeveloped character wise, they are great visually. We also are introduced to a classic villain team: The Vicious 6. The Vicious 6 in Minions: The Rise of Gru I can’t imagine that Minionese (which is what their language is actually called) is easy to deliver, but he does a wonderful job and makes each Minion their own. That doesn’t matter though because of how ridiculous the voice is it could work for any age! Pierre Coffin should be commended as well for his vocal work as the Minions. ![]() Steve Carell is once again great as Gru, this time playing a 12 year old version of the character. Pierre Coffin as Stuart, Bob, and Kevin in Minions: The Rise of Gru They will appreciate the colorful outfits of the time though, along with our little yellow Minions. The 70s setting is a lot of fun, filled with some great music and pop culture references of that time! However, those will fly over the heads of the little kids coming to see this movie I was in a theater full of families with children under 5 and I can almost guarantee they have no clue what Jaws is (which is definitely a good thing). While it is a better overall film in general, it’s hard to tell who exactly the film’s target audience is.
